LANHAM, MD — At a town hall on Saturday, Rep. David Trone (MD-06) called for a permanent ceasefire, a hostage exchange, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s resignation, and aid to rebuild Gaza. The statement was made in response to a question from Kate Sugarman, a Maryland resident and a citizen of both Israel and the United States.

In his remarks, Congressman Trone said, “we need a permanent ceasefire and hostage release.” Earlier in his remarks he said, “Netanyahu has got to go” and “we have to get [Netanyahu] to a ceasefire.” He added, “A life is a life. One Israeli life is the same as one life in Palestine.”

This statement is a significant pivot for Rep. Trone who has not only been a close ally of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in Congress, but is also the only Member of Congress who is a six-figure donor to the right-wing lobby. As Israel has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians in its violent assault on Gaza in recent months, AIPAC has attacked Members of Congress who — like Congressman Trone — have called for a ceasefire.

Kate Sugarman, the Maryland resident and IfNotNow member who asked Rep. Trone the question, said “I’m glad that Rep. Trone has joined the call for a permanent ceasefire and a hostage exchange. It’s time for President Biden to push for a ceasefire and end Israel’s war on Gaza.”
